    Becoming a Successful NJB Coach

I know how overwhelming coaching a group of young people can be. Teaching and coaching basketball is what I do and have done professionally since 1975. I know there are a number of ways to teach the game of basketball, but I have a few thoughts that you might find helpful as you begin your journey into the ranks of becoming a "basketball coach.
    • Be quick but don't hurry - Start with the idea that players don't have to be fast or in a rush, just quick and under control.
    • Have each player on your team bring a ball to practice - This will save time and increase the number of repetitions that your player will get in all your drills involving the ball and shooting.
    • A free throw is the only shot in the game that never changes - The shot is always 15 feet, the shooter has 10 seconds to take the shot, and the shooter is always open for an uncontested look at the basket. Spend time in practice making free throws.
    • Catch and shoot - Teach catching the ball in a ready position to take an open shot. Eliminate the catch, dribble, shoot habit. Your team will get more open shots.
    • Make yourself hard to guard - Teach your team to keep moving on offense. Turn your offense into a game of "hide and seek." A player is very easy to guard when standing still.
    • Make team defense...offensive - Teach defense first. Players will always practice offense even on their own, but they will never practice defensive skills on their own. Good team defense leads to easy baskets.
    • Out of bounds plays - Your team can get 4 easy baskets each game if they understand one or two simple plays. You must also teach how to guard against out of bounds plays by your opponent.
    • Teach the game - The game is played up and down the court and needs to be taught as such. Teach the change from offense to defense. Teach the change from defense to offense. Teach the out of bounds play to offense. Teach defending the out of bounds play. Teach free throw situations, both transition to offense or defense.
    • Keep it simple - Did your team have fun today? - Did your team improve today? - Did you, the coach have fun today? If you answered "yes" to these few questions, you are on the right track to a great experience in coaching!
